School Travel Planning
School Travel Planning
To increase the travel awareness of schools’ staff, parents and pupils, thereby seeking to change the manner in which schools are accessed.
Objectives / Innovative Aspects
The key aims are:
  • to increase the travel awareness of schools’ staff, parents and pupils, thereby seeking to change the manner in which schools are accessed
  • to have a positive effect on the modal split by encouraging walking, cycling and the use of public transport
  • to reduce road traffic, particularly at peak times.

The Measure
Schools will be encouraged to examine the manner in which school staff, pupils and parents travel to school. All the LCC schools within the area will be offered assistance in the development of a school travel plan (where they do not already have one). Ongoing advice and support will also be available.

Alternative modes of transport to the private car will be promoted. Schools successfully developing an STP will be eligible to receive grants towards relevant projects, for example cycle storage.

Implementation Status
In South Ribble and Preston all maintained schools have received STP information. Awareness was also raised through Partnership Working e.g. 2Move Festival and Healthy Schools programme with Preston Primary Care Trust . The pilot of a new Walk to School initiative was introduced at a number of schools. The development of an STP Workshop Model, rolled out in September / October 2006 and attended by 23 South Ribble & Preston primary schools has proved, through evaluation, a valuable innovative measure.
Seminars and workshops will be delivered for head teachers to increase awareness of STP and take-up by schools.
To date, 77% of schools in South Ribble and 62% of schools in Preston have an approved STP.
