Alternative transport modes
Planning for alternative transport modes
The main objective of this measure is to plan the improvement conditions for the convenience and safety of pedestrians/cyclists, and to enhance the pedestrian/cycling environment, taking into consideration design, access and security.
Objectives / Innovative Aspects
General objectives will include:
  • Increasing walking and cycling
  • Facilitating the use of transport resources with lower pollution emissions
  • Reducing dependency on the car
  • Improving integration between walking, cycling and other modes of transport
  • Including people with restricted mobility

The Measure
Develop walking and cycling strategies where these do not already exist.

Public consultation on the walking strategy.

Identify the study area, networks and hierarchy.

Undertake a pedestrian/cycle audit of the city centre, and other important routes and areas.

Involve the community in audits of their local areas, perhaps using the ‘Living Streets’ approach

Create a strategic plan for development of alternative transport modes (walking, cycling).
