CIVITAS VANGUARD
Skopje
Skopje Skopje website
Skopje, capital of Macedonia, is an ideal place to start discovering Macedonia. The city is home to over 600,000 inhabitants and a history of more than 2,000 years. It is a place where many roads and cultures have met. Skopje is a modern city combining contemporary architecture with a well preserved and restored old city.
Skopje's approach to public transport is framed by a combination of facts and events. Skopje is quite large, (7088ha) and is home to 25% of all Macedonians. As such, the proportion of car ownership is high, with 202 Passenger cars/1000 inhabitants. In 1963, a major earthquake hit and devastated the city, which was then rebuilt rapidly.

The majority of inhabitants travel through the city when returning home (47.2%) and going to work (22.3%). The favoured means of transport are public transport (34%), walking (33.5%) and passenger vehicles (28.4%).

The average daily mobility of the inhabitants of the City of Skopje is 2,11 travels per inhabitant, broken down as follows: 0,71 travels accomplished by walking and 1,40 travels by other means of transport.

The current situation of public transport in the city is characterised by an old organisational concept of transportation, an aging vehicle fleet, no appropriate or non-existant passenger information in real time, no existing systems for smart ticketing and intelligent cards and lacking urban transport policy that is supported by the local government. However, new concepts are being developed to improve the quality of service in Skopje's public transport.

These will focus on:

  • Creating a strategy for the development of sustainable urban transport system

  • Creating a strategy for the development of PT system in Skopje, including solutions for the problems of PT organisation - market definition, financing, quality of service, etc.

  • Regulating the market with the establishment and implementation of the new organisational concept

  • Improving the quality of service through renewal of the vehicle fleet, introducing real-time passenger information, smart ticketing based on integrated fare system for all PT service providers, Light Rail Transit for better service - faster, greater capacity, more environmentally friendly, greater comfort Introduction of the AVL system and passenger real time information

  • Reducing the pollution from PT vehicles through conversion of transit diesel vehicles to CNG and the introduction of electric powered LRT vehicles

  • Supporting urban transport policy by the local government

Best practices and the know how of other CIVITAS cities will be used to implement measures and should be treated as a high priority in the future traffic development policy, which will be the result of the RENAISSANCE project .
